Volunteer Services (VS) is a program of Catholic Community Services that provides household chore and transportation services for frail and vulnerable older adults living with disabilities that limit their ability to accomplish essential tasks of daily living. VS does not have strict financial criteria - its purpose is to serve as a safety net for those who do not qualify for other services, cannot afford to pay for services themselves, and do not have family and friends available to help them. All services are provided by volunteers at no cost to recipients and are offered regardless of race, ethnicity, culture, gender, sexual orientation or religion.
"I really care about the (people I serve). They are always so appreciative for something that is so easy for us to provide. I am always aware of how blessed I am to have good health and the means to take care of my needs and family nearby who would be there to help me if I needed it. I like to be able to do something to help others, and driving is pretty easy. Driving doesn't even require any physical exertion. I always bring a book to read while the (person I'm driving) is having an appointment or doing their shopping. It gives me a good excuse to sit, read, and enjoy myself while doing a 'good deed'. I always enjoy visiting with the (people I serve) and getting to know them." (Volunteer Chris)
"(My volunteer) is a great person. She helps me with vacuuming, cleaning, and even goes to the library for me. She is thoughtful and very kind. She has brought me cards and flowering plants (which I love) when I was ill. She checks in on me every now and then when she can't come over. I'd like to vote for her for president. She is just wonderful. You can tell she is genuinely concerned. When she says hello you know she really means it. I think this is a wonderful service and I couldn't live alone without it." (VS participant)
"A family brought me a (Shoebox of Joy) around Christmas time last year (from VS's holiday gift program) and it really meant a lot to me. Not because of the monetary value of the gift, but because someone went out of their way to brighten my holiday. I kept the box with a few items still in it, and on harder days I open up the box as a way to encourage myself" (VS participant)
Our mission is to build better lives, stronger families and healthier communities. Employees and volunteers come from many faith traditions to serve and support poor and vulnerable people. Our focus is on those individuals, children, families, and communities struggling with poverty and the effects of intolerance and racism. We actively join with others to work for justice.
