In partnership with the Home Instead Foundation's Give 65 Campaign, Northwest Neighbors Village seeks to build on the successes of 2020's first annual fundraising campaign designed specifically to support subsidized memberships for older adults of low to moderate income. Northwest Neighbors Village members benefit from increased socialization opportunities through volunteer support including medical transportation, regular phone calls and socially distant friendly visits, and technology support, as well as participation in member-driven social, cultural, and educational programming.
Social isolation is a growing concern among the older population. In fact, according to the AARP Foundation, the health risks of prolonged isolation are equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Northwest Neighbors Village proudly provides a subsidy to 26% of our membership. Nine out of 10 subsidized members live alone. On average, Northwest Neighbors Village's subsidized members rely on volunteer services 10% more than members full paying members; volunteer services that increase members' access to medical care, groceries, and relationship building with a trusted volunteer neighbor. Increased funding for subsidized memberships will allow us to offer our valuable service to more seniors in our community regardless of their ability to pay.
We envision a generous, supportive community where older adults are valued, age with dignity, and enjoy opportunities for growth and engagement. Last year Northwest Neighbors Village volunteers provided more than 9,000 hours of volunteer support - That is more hours than there are in a year! While our volunteer services have been adjusted to meet social distancing guidelines during the coronavirus pandemic, our volunteer services have increased to meet the needs of each individual member.
"Thank you for your extraordinary efforts on our behalf...I would like to take this opportunity to let you know how very touched I am to know my volunteer is keeping a caring eye on me." - Member A.R.
"I very much appreciate you checking in on my mother. We are trying to help her cope with this crazy time and living out of state makes it even harder to do." - Family member C.D.
"It's my pleasure to be able to somehow participate in this effort. I'm so fond of the lovely folks I get to chat with each week. They cheer me, as well. I'm learning so much about their lives. I hope when this is over we will be able to have a real 'social' reception where we can meet each other face to face. Thank you so much for your kind words and special leadership". - Volunteer, C.R.
Northwest Neighbors Village's mission is to enable older adults to thrive as they age in our community by offering a robust network of resources and opportunities.
