Meals on Wheels of Norman, Inc. is a 501 c 3 non profit, United Way agency. Founded in 1972, Meals on Wheels is currently celebrating its 45th year of serving the Norman community. Meals on Wheels strives to improve nutrition by providing meal service to the ill, disabled, and senior residents within the Norman City Limits.
Since the beginning, Meals on Wheels has maintained the same basic philosophy to improve the mental health of the isolated recipients by providing visitation and to improve the well-being of senior citizens by providing coordination with existing services in the Norman area.
During 2016, Meals on Wheels of Norman volunteer drivers delivered 66,313 nutritious meals to 711 frail of health and home bound citizens of our community. A total of 17,647.75 hours was donated by dedicated volunteers to accomplish this feat.
In order serve the community, Meals on Wheels relies on a base of over 150 volunteer drivers to deliver approximately 300 meals each weekday. There are 20 different routes that are delivered daily between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Volunteers deliver hot noon-time meals, as well as shelf -stable meals for the weekends and holidays, emergency food closet items, and pet food for our recipients with furry friends. Our volunteers come from all walks of life and range in age from pre-school to retirees.
Meals on Wheels is much more than a noon time meal delivery service to the frail of health and elderly of our community. A very dedicated group of volunteers offer more than just a nutritious meal. Often the Meals on Wheels volunteer driver is the only visitation the client receives during the day.
Throughout the years there have been countless occasions when our volunteers have come to the rescue of their clients. Whether it is a life-threatening situation, a change in behavior due to medication or someone in need of a little companionship, our wonderful and dedicated volunteers make a difference.
A sense of security is provided to our clients and their families, knowing that someone will be checking on them. A friendly smile always makes the day better.
