Senior Nutrition Program. By providing and delivering meals Monday-Friday to home bound seniors, seniors are less likely to develop chronic illness through proper nutrition. These meals also allow some of the clients to remain in their homes and out of senior care facilities as they would not otherwise be able to have access to meals, nor be able to prepare the meals for themselves. The meals reduce the threat of hunger to low-income seniors that do not always have funds for food. Seniors that are able to come to one of our congregate sites for lunch Monday-Friday, also have the opportunity to socialize and see others, which reduces isolation and depression. Proper nutrition is one of the elements of healthy aging, both mentally and physically.
Comal County Senior Citizens Foundation is the only organization that is contracted with Meals on Wheels to serve the four counties that we serve, Comal, Guadalupe, Karnes, and Wilson Counties in Texas. We provide home delivered meals to seniors, veterans, and disabled adults that are home bound, and we provide congregate meals to seniors 60 years of age and older, in three of the counties listed above. We provide these meals Monday-Friday, every week of the year, and at no cost, regardless of income. We are currently serving approximately 10,000 meals per month.
Along with our Nutrition Program, we also offer Fitness, Education, and Socialization Programs . These programs are all key elements of healthy aging, both mentally and physically.
We help seniors to age in place and enjoy life to the fullest.
In a recent conversation with one of our clients that comes everyday to the Senior Center, I asked her what this place means to her. She has been coming here for 10 years, and she also volunteers as a server in the kitchen for Congregate meals, everyday Monday-Friday. She began coming here after her husband passed away. Some of her comments were, "Our center is the greatest! It's a good place to come and see all my friends and, seeing the friendly staff here means everything to me. It's a great place for seniors to come to, but it's not just anyplace, it's an awesome place. I come here for the laughter and sunshine that is here. I love helping people, and that's why I volunteer in the kitchen. I ride the ART bus, but if that was not available my daughter would find a way to get me here because she knows how much it means to me."
The mission of Comal County Senior Citizens Foundation is enriching the lives of aging adults. We have programs and services that enhance the quality of life for the aging population.
