We need a safe walking area for our senior center members and our Adult Day Center participants. Many of them enjoy walking outside for exercise and fresh air and we need a complete path around our building that is safe for them. We currently share a parking lot with another organization and buses also come through our parking lot. Our members would benefit greatly from an area that is safe and secure for them to exercise.
Contributions to the citizens
Our Senior Circle of Friends Adult Day Care Program provides the opportunity for the caregivers to continue to keep their loved ones in the home and significantly defer institutionalization. Because of our extended hours, the caregivers are also able to work full time.
Our Senior Circle of Friends Adult Day Care Program is the only State licensed adult day care facility in Montgomery County.
The ATSC contributes to the citizens 0f Clarksville and Montgomery County by providing a large, multipurpose facility that is totally handicapped accessible and tobacco-free. Many staff and volunteers are on hand daily to plan, organize, facilitate and teach numerous programs and activities that are physically, mentally, and socially stimulating.
The Ajax Turner Senior Center's "Contributions to the Local Citizens" can not accurately be reflected by our reported participation/membership numbers in Section 4 of this document. Hundreds more are served through the following programs and services:
Adults and teens attending our weekly Al-Anon and Ala-Teens evening meetings remain anonymous.
Monthly group meetings for Gold Star Wives, Disabled American Veterans, Foster Grandparents and the local "Neighborhood Watch"
Support Group meetings are all intergenerational, offering space and supplies for the Blind and Visually Impaired, Diabetic Support Group, Congestive Heart Problems Group, and Grief Support & Information.
As the County's only distribution site for USDA Commodities, we serve many low-income families and seniors.
Disabled and injured persons of all ages benefit from our "Medical Equipment Lending Closet" as we always have wheelchairs, walkers, hospital beds and bathroom equipment available at no cost for as long as needed.
February through April of each year the Center hosts the AARP Income Tax Service which prepares tax returns for any person, any age and any income level at no cost. Our staff schedules hundreds of appointments for the volunteer tax prepares.
The ATSC is a registered site for Community Service (Court-ordered) volunteer hours for those 18 and older.
Information, Referrals, and Assistance are given out through daily calls and emails for all services available to senior adults.
Homebound seniors are called Monday through Friday and many others in nursing homes and assisted living facilities to receive weekly visits.
Local family members report how they personally are benefited by the services we offer their "senior" family members, especially the hot, nutritious meals served daily.
The Center can not deny services to senior citizens who choose not to become members or will not sign participation sheets.
Uniqueness of Services
The Ajax Turner Senior Center is unique in that a person 50 years or older may receive so many services and participate in such a wide variety of activities and events at one location at free or income-based fees. Our members and attendees range from homeless seniors to well-educated professionals and politicians.
The center's kitchen serves breakfast every morning from 8 until 9:30 a.m. and a hot lunch from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. with coffee and other beverages available all day. Most days free bread and pastries are handed out and carry-out meals are taken home for the evening. Between meals, seniors may enjoy Bingo with non-perishable food items as prizes.
We know of no other place in Montgomery County where seniors may have their blood pressure checked daily, use the exercise equipment, enjoy hair and nail salon services, watch TV, check out books & movies without worrying about late fees, socialize with friends while enjoying meals & snacks, play cards or board games, enjoy pool or horseshoes, attend Bible study and health & wellness classes, do arts & crafts, shop in a Thrift Shop, attend dances with live music and enjoy numerous other educational and recreational activities. These are just part of the 360 separate activities we offer each month.
THE ATSC is also unique as 75% of the employees are age 55 or older.
