Fundraising Campaign

Senior Community Services is seeking support to reopen and operate safely during the COVID19 pandemic so that our senior centers can welcome active older adults and to provide online programming for older adults who are not comfortable leaving their homes during the pandemic or have dysfunctions that make it difficult for them to leave their homes. By complementing onsite programs with online classes, lectures and demonstrations, SCS seeks to overcome social isolation.

More About Us

SCS is a community-based organization that is the oldest and largest provider of services for older adults in Delaware County. With four nationally-accredited senior centers, and an abundance of programs directly serving the aging population in the service area of Delaware County. SCS' continually develops and improves upon a comprehensive, coordinated and accessible system of services responsive to the needs of the aging population within the community. Last year, SCS' programming touched more than 23,000 people in Delaware County. SCS programs and services help seniors become:

HEALTHIER - nearly 90% of participants report that their health is good to excellent, while 75% take better care of themselves;
HAPPIER - 90% of participants have made new friends and formed positive relationships and 72% feel stronger community connections;
MORE INDEPENDENT - more than 95% of participants receiving meals and other supportive services have greater confidence in their ability to live independently in their homes and age in place.

Programs available at SCS:

SCS' four nationally accredited Senior Centers nurture the mind, body and soul of active older adults. At Centers in Yeadon, Folsom, Chester and Darby Township there are health screenings, informative lectures, intergenerational activities, trips and cultural celebrations. Nearly 7,000 individuals made 83,743 visits to SCS Centers last year.

SCS' Congregate Nutrition Program serves almost 26,000 noon time southern style dinners, deli sandwiches, and hot lunches at SCS' Centers.

SCS' Center for Life Long Learning provides adult education that engages, energizes and entertains while fostering active aging. Last year over 500 courses (nearly 2,200 individual class sessions) were offered at ten sites across Delaware County, including SCS Senior Centers.

SCS' Care Management's staff connects low-income elderly to support services such as assistance with bathing, installation of stair glides and resources for light chores. Over 1,850 homebound older persons are served annually.

SCS' Aging at Home - A Community Network is a model initiative in Delaware County, supported by a three year partnership with United Way. Personalized transportation, home repair referral, and assistance with chores - such as raking leaves and removing snow - are just some of the services aimed at closing the gap between allowing an elder to enjoy community living versus rehoming into a facility. There are over 492 members engaged in this pilot program, well above the expected number.

Senior Center at Home staff and trained volunteers reduce depression and increase motivation by engaging homebound seniors in meaningful recreational therapy activities such as playing scrabble, making scrapbooks and visiting with therapy dogs. Nearly 1,500 homebound older persons have been served.

SCS' Family Caregiver Support Program assists families who maintain their loved ones at home. Last year, 191 families received education, emotional support and financial reimbursement for caregiving supplies and services. SCS also hosts The Caregiver Academy, an annual series of educational seminars with speakers specifically geared towards helping individuals caring for a loved one.

SCS' Hearing Discovery Center provides education, support groups and a library of assistive device samples for the hearing impaired, and their families, to explore

SCS' Cognitive Stimulation contains abundant content to trigger sensory responses and powerful reminiscence and discussions. 386 kits were used for 17,605 person-to-kit program interactions at adult day programs, assisted living and nursing homes, as well as in the community and in individual's homes.
