"The worst thing about getting older is that you have so much wisdom and experience to share with younger generations, but no one gives you the opportunity to share. It's like you don't exist."
--Retired design engineer in his late-70s
At PrimeLife Enrichment we are well aware of how difficult it can be to obtain private and/or public funding for senior services, especially when compared to funding for education, our youth, the environment, or to fight hunger, poverty, etc. Perhaps this is due to a negative societal perception of seniors, especially those 65 and older, as burdens to society rather than as valuable assets with much to contribute to their communities. As the quote above illustrates, it is not uncommon for seniors to feel marginalized if not totally ignored by our society and its younger generations. How unfortunate for seniors and for society that such a negative perception exists. Well over 50 years ago, President John F. Kennedy addressed this issue in a 1963 message to Congress:
"This increase in the life span and in the number of our senior citizens presents this nation with increased opportunities: the opportunity to draw upon their skill and sagacity-and the opportunity to provide the respect and recognition they have earned. It is not enough for a great nation merely to have added new years to life-our objective must also be to add new life to those years."
PrimeLife Enrichment provides a wide variety of programs and services that promote independence, optimal wellness and socialization for those aged 50 and beyond. Services include: Information & Referral, Caregiver & Bereavement Support, In-Home Assistance; Case Management, Door-to-Door Transportation and a comprehensive program of educational, fitness and social acitivities at the Enrichment Center in Carmel. Those in need of Transportation, crisis intervention or in-home services are usually guided to PrimeLife Enrichment by medical professionals, service organizations and/or other community partners such as first responders. As people age, many experience loneliness, social isolation, and depression as they struggle to lead purposeful lives. The benefits of physical activity are well documented, and most understand that aerobic activity for older adults can increase stamina, ward off viral illnesses, reduce health risks, manage chronic conditions, strengthen the heart, keep arteries clear, boost mood and help individuals stay active and independent as they age, (per Mayo Clinic). But the serious risks and detrimental effects of social isolation are not as well known. According to a Cornell University study, "The health risks posed by social isolation may be particularly severe for older adults, especially as they are likely to face stressful life course transitions, health problems and disabilities." Though our community is rich with fitness resources, only the PrimeLife Enrichment Center offers comprehensive fitness, social and educational opportunities in a peer supported social environment. Most Enrichment Center members report dramatic improvements in physical and mental health, and depend on regular participation to sustain independent function.
At PrimeLife Enrichment, we value the lives of our senior citizens and will continue to spread the word that they are a valuable asset to our community and our society. We invite you to share our vision of a future where many more seniors can reap the benefits of leading a healthy, active lifestyle while remaining in their homes.
