For CICOA clients on low, fixed incomes, the need for affordable and reliable transportation is urgent. CICOA's fleet of 18 vehicles is always busy, but it's not enough to meet the demand. You can give seniors a way to go.

Description of project

CICOA's Way2Go transportation service provides Marion County residents over age 60 with safe and reliable transportation in order to help them be as independent as possible. CICOA serves seniors with the following transportation options:
• Essential Needs - door-to-door service, providing individualized transport to life-essential services such as medical appointments, grocery shopping and pharmacies.
• Shuttle Service - group transportation provided to 48 subsidized senior apartment communities and community centers throughout Marion County. Shuttles visit grocery stores, shopping centers, banks and other locations.
• Taxi Discounts - CICOA partners with Indianapolis Yellow Cab to provide discount coupons and wheelchair vouchers for transportation for any purpose, at any hour.
• My Freedom - in partnership with the Central Indiana Regional Transportation Authority and the Federal Transit Administration, low-cost vouchers allow transportation for any purpose within Marion County and the seven surrounding counties (Shelby, Hancock, Johnson, Morgan, Hamilton, Hendricks and Boone).

Way2Go partners with the Albert & Sara Reuben Senior & Community Resource Center and the Franciscan Alliance Program for All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) program to provide transportation for their members to and from the centers. In addition, Way2Go is a Medicaid transportation provider.

In fiscal year 2018, Way2Go provided 49,932 trips for 2,392 passengers. Way2Go averages more than 6,000 incoming phone calls per month. When individuals contact CICOA, transportation help is the third highest request. Without Way2Go transportation, many of the people we serve are at risk for being institutionalized, but the support of Way2Go allows them to remain in their own homes and communities where they feel comfortable and enjoy the greatest possible independence, dignity and quality of life.

The biggest challenge that Way2Go faces is the high demand for transportation to and from dialysis appointments. Currently Way2Go has a waiting list for clients requesting dialysis transportation, and last year had to deny 7,692 trips because there are not enough drivers and vehicles, and some trip requests fall outside of Way2Go's current operating hours. Way2Go's impact could be even more significant with funding to support dialysis transportation.
