With your gift, you're giving more than just money. You're giving the gift of security and independence to an older adult in need.
We've all slipped or even fallen on a patch of ice at some point, haven't we? Do you remember how sore you were the next couple of days? Now imagine you're older, your balance is worse and your bones are more fragile than they used to be. That fall that once just resulted in a faint bruise and soreness for a couple of days now results in a broken leg and an extended hospital stay.
Each year, one-third of Americans aged 65+ fall. In fact, falls are the leading cause of fatal injury and the most common cause of non-fatal trauma-related hospital admissions among older adults. In 2000, the direct medical cost of fatal and non-fatal injuries totaled over $19 billion, $28.2 billion in 2010 dollars. The financial toll for older adult falls is only expected to increase as the population ages and could reach as high as $54.9 billion by 2020.
Falls with or without injury often have a mental and emotional impact. A growing number of older adults fear falling, and as a result, self-limit activities and social engagements. This can result in further physical decline, depression, social isolation and feelings of helplessness.
Imagine being stuck at home, all alone, in the cold, dark winter months because you're afraid of falling. Now imagine if someone came to plow your driveway and sidewalk for you, so you didn't have to worry about slipping and falling on the snow and ice. What a relief and blessing that would be! And, you have the power to make that happen for older adults in our communities!
Our Household & Outside Maintenance for Elderly (HOME) program is raising funds to keep the driveways and sidewalks of over 300 older adults clean and fall free during the 2017/2018 winter season.
Please consider giving older adults the gift of security and independence this winter by donating to our project.
During the GIVE65 Event only, The GIVE65 Incentive Fund will be matching donations dollar-for-dollar up to a total of $5,000.
