Like most small businesses and nonprofits, SASi is struggling to support its critical infrastructure. Under normal circumstances, we would be receiving funds from various activities from the senior center and DayBreak center, in addition to our normal fundraising events. However, most of these revenue streams have temporarily dried up due to the closures resulting from COVID-19. Being able to keep the lights on and fairly compensate our 8 part-time employees is now our primary concern, for without our staff, there would be no one to prepare, package, and deliver over 2300 meals per month to the home-bound seniors of Bonner county.
Currently both centers are closed due to the pandemic. However, under normal circumstances, we would be offering bridge and pinochle twice a week, dances twice a month, bingo weekly, and various other activities. We have a computer lab for seniors who need assistance using the web, a movie and book library, health screenings, and tax help via AARP in the spring. The DayBreak center is an adult care facility for seniors suffering from memory-related illnesses. We provide stimulating activities and meals for seniors while their caregivers take a much needed break. Finally, our conference room is utilized by various local organizations for meetings.
Although SASi has been closed, we have not been idle. We have reached out to different local businesses to complete improvement projects around both centers. Not only are both buildings freshened up and organized, but they are now safer. We have installed ADA compliant doors and ordered ergonomic chairs so that our seniors can move about without the need for assistance. Finally, we have added a virtual activities tab to our website so that seniors can visit Highway61 (a virtual senior center), or take a trip to a museum, national park, or a virtual vacation. Keeping our seniors engaged and active while isolated is a big concern and one we hope to mitigate through these online activities.
