This summer Northwest Neighbors Village will be conducting our first fundraising campaign designed specifically to support subsidized memberships for older adults of low to moderate income. Northwest Neighbors Village members benefit from increased socialization opportunities through volunteer support including transportation, friendly visits and simple home repair, as well as participation in member-driven social, cultural, and educational programming.
Social isolation is a growing concern among the older population. In fact, according to the AARP Foundation, the health risks of prolonged isolation are equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Northwest Neighbors Village proudly provides a subsidy to 28% of our membership. On average, Northwest Neighbors Village's subsidized members rely on volunteer services 10% more than members full paying members; volunteer services that increase members' access to medical care, social gatherings, groceries, places of worship, and relationship building with a trusted volunteer neighbor. Increased funding for subsidized memberships will allow us to offer our valuable service to more seniors in our community regardless of their ability to pay.
We envision a generous, supportive community where older adults are valued, age with dignity, and enjoy opportunities for growth and engagement. Last year Northwest Neighbors Village volunteers provided more than 9,000 hours of volunteer support - That is more hours than there are in a year! Through help with tasks like transportation, grocery shopping, and simple home repair, our volunteers provide more than assistance with practical tasks but open the door to neighbor to neighbor connections. Northwest Neighbors Village's member-driven programming includes two book clubs, a weekly gentle yoga class, discussion groups, and special events and outings scheduled throughout the year. Members whose needs go beyond the scope of volunteer support can rest assured. In such cases Northwest Neighbors Village makes connections to professional resources to ensure our members are appropriately supported in their community.
Northwest Neighbors Village's mission is to enable older adults to thrive as they age in our community by offering a robust network of resources and opportunities.
