Description of project

Limited transportation access affects many aspects of life including basic human needs for nutrition, health, employment, and socialization with family and friends. Most critical of these needs is the ability to access medical care.

According to the US Census Bureau, 25% of older adults ages 65 and older in Lehigh and Northampton Counties live below 200% of the federal poverty level of $21,660. This translates to 27,228 seniors, many of whom face limited transportation options due to limited income.

Seniors often have difficulty walking to the bus stop, or waiting for a bus in inclement weather. For those who live in the suburbs or rural outlying areas transportation may not be available at all or on a limited basis. Often, the transportation burden falls on family and friends who may not be available when needed. For those seniors on a limited income without family or friends close by, there are few options.
