We are fundraising for general operating funds. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, along with doing our regular services of transportation to medical appointments, homemaking, chore service and caregiver support, we are providing care packages for our clients which consist of jokes, activities, food - especially fresh produce and resources to virtual activities and support groups. We also are providing friendly phone calls to our clients since all of our in-person activities have been cancelled such as weekly meals, exercise and educational classes.
Helping Hands Outreach serves older adults and adults with disabilities in and around Holdingford and St. Stephen in Stearns County, MN. Our service area spans approximately 200 square miles.
Last year Helping Hands Outreach professional staff and more than 140 volunteers provided 417 persons with 10,608 hours of services in 3 program areas -
a) Direct Volunteer and Professional Services: This includes transportation for medical, shopping or personal needs; individual health consultations and providing information and referral to other resources. We also manage two monthly lunch and learn programs and two weekly lunch programs in Holdingford and St. Stephen.
b) Health Education and Training: This includes conducting evidence-based health and wellness classes; Dementia education and community training; home safety checks and sponsoring two annual health fairs.
c) Caregiver Support: This includes one-on-one sessions with caregivers by our trained caregiver consultants; caregiver respite and education through the Powerful Tools for Caregivers© classes. As part of our Dementia programming our caregiver staff is trained in early detection and caregiver support. We have opened our adult day center within the community of Holdingford to help meet the growing need for respite care and providing a safe daytime location for older frail adults.
These are just some of the thank you's that we have received from our clients after receiving a care package during our state's "Stay at Home" order:
"How thoughtful you guys are. It made my day to receive your gift. There are some days that a person feels sad. Love you guys"
"My husband and I would like to thank you and everyone so much for the "Goodie Bag", small red potatoes (they were a treat) and the good chicken. That was very thoughtful and all of it was appreciated"
"Thanks for the goodies - really enjoyed the corny jokes!"
"What a nice surprise! I enjoyed the snacks while I was doing all my extra prayers, etc! The puzzles and jokes were fun and I'm still working on all the other stuff!
To create a healthy community where older adults and adults with disabilities want to live and be a vital part of our community.
