Helping Hands of Yuma (Helping Hands) is a 501 (c) (3) charitable organization founded in 1996. For over 20 years Helping Hands has been working for the welfare of our elderly and disabled in the Greater Foothills /Yuma Area. We currently serve and support approximately 630 seniors with 350 volunteers.
I would like to share a story about one of our dear Care Clients that I will refer to as Mary. Mary does not have any family here in Yuma to assist her with the needs of daily living. Mary doesn't drive anymore so she needs regular assistance getting to her Doctor's appointments, taking care of her banking and she also needs help with her grocery shopping. Mary also needs some minor handyman tasks completed periodically in order to support her safety in her home. Last week Mary received a call from someone who said they were from IRS and told her she owed money. Mary was unsure what to do so she called Helping Hands to ask for our help in determining if she should have given them money.Thankfully Mary avoided being scammed. Mary also has days, even weeks where she doesn't have any interaction with neighbors or community except for our staff and volunteers at Helping Hands.
Mary's story is very common to us at Helping Hands. She needs assistance to live as independently as possible and desires to have social time with others. If it weren't for the services, events and activities of Helping Hands and the support of our faithful Volunteers, Mary would have to try and find a way to receive the help she must have and the socialization she desperately needs in order to enjoy independence and valuable relationships in her life. Many of our Elderly need our support through the kind of services that Helping Hands provides at no charge.
Below is a list of services that are available to our Care Clients on a regular basis at no cost to them:
• Transportation to vital appointments including medical, dental, vision, therapy, banking and personal care needs
• Friendly Visitors/Friendly Callers provide weekly companionship and socialization to our care clients in their homes
• Grocery Shopping service provides grocery shopping with and for our clients to promote and support independence
• Social Events, Activities and Special Celebrations are provided in order to help our Care Clients enjoy community time with their peers
• Handyman help with minor home repairs and routine home maintenance in support of our Care Clients independence
• Medical Equipment loaned out at no cost and provided to anyone in need in the Yuma community
• Community Resource information for many other services and support in the Yuma area providing advocacy to our Seniors and their families
We are also looking at increasing the assistance we provide through new programs that will continue to meet the ongoing need of those we serve. Our Elderly need our support and Helping Hands desires to make sure that this support continues for each and every one who is in need. There is no other organization in Yuma County that currently provides the free services to the elderly and disabled as Helping Hands does.
We have received numerous wonderful cards and letters from our Care Clients, their families and the community. Here are just a few of the testimonies shared with us at Helping Hands.
"Thank you so much for being there when I needed your help. I had no one else to turn to. I'm sure glad you were all there for me." Thanks again, Kathy
"Thank you for the countless rides you provide to my mom, you have made a huge difference in her life because of your kindness". Gratefully, Jan
"Thank you so much for the continual help you give to the community - you have shared many wheel chairs, walkers, crutches and canes over the years to us and many we know. We pray you will be here for many years - as you know insurance will only pay for some things needed to recover. Thank you for all your hard work". Stella
"Just a note to say what a fun day my friend Nancy and I had at your luncheon. The decorations, food, and music were great. You did an excellent job and I am looking forward to the next one. Thank you all for being so friendly and nice." Gods Blessings, Betty
"I'm so thankful for Helping Hands for sending out the guys to help me. It meant so much and they were so kind. These acts of kindness meant so much to me as I just can't do much since my husband passed. These men were wonderful." Thanks again, Margrette
"Thanks so much for getting me to all the Doctor appointments I've had. I couldn't have done it with out all the wonderful Helping Hands!!" Helen
