Description of project

Helping seniors stay independent is what we are all about! We are asking for funding to extend and create new ways for seniors to connect socially. One program we are looking to implement in partnership with the National Volunteer Caregivers Network (NVCN) is called Caregiver Canines. For a small initial and annual fee, affiliate members receive the right to utilize the Caregiver Canines (registered trademark), as well as receive training, mentoring, and tips for successfully incorporating the program into existing services. The program involves bringing trained service dogs to visit people in the comfort of their own homes. These visits allow a special bond to form between the dog, the senior and the handler. Dogs are known to reduce stress and loneliness and improve the health and self-esteem of those they visit. This program brings together those who share a mutual love of dogs and people. bringing joy and companionship to those who love animals but are no longer able to care for a dog or pet at home. Another new program we are looking to introduce is a pen pal program, with volunteers sending notes and cards to our most isolated and lonely seniors. Lastly, we will continue our inter-generational activities with the local Boys Team Charity of Ahwatukee. The Boys Team Charity delivered over 30 Easter baskets this year to some of our seniors living alone. They loved seeing the young people and the excitement of the baskets too. The Boys Team has also helped with our holiday lights tour, our annual book sale, they address the monthly birthday cards we send, and help process the "plarn" for our crochet mat project for homeless seniors too. The interaction with the kids and parents is a true delight for our seniors. Helping seniors stay connected to the community in a variety of ways helps prevent isolation and loneliness which can lead to depression and rapidly declining health. Funding from GIVE65 will help us expand and explore these new ways to connect seniors to our community. Thank you for your support!
